The Modern History Research Center (MHRC) was established in January 2002.
Taking advantage of Hong Kong's role as an intellectual bridge between China and the West, many of its activities have focused on cross-cultural encounters, especially in the history of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
The objectives of the Centre is as follow:
- To support and promote research on modern and contemporary history, with a particular focus on developing research excellence in the areas of smart heritage, spatial history, and transnational populations.
- To contribute to the understanding and conservation of facets of Hong Kong’s built and intangible cultural heritage.
- To promote collaboration between scholars through collaborative research projects and events.
- To produce impactful works of research which will benefit various Hong Kong communities and to engage in consultancy work with public and private partners.
